John Donne is one of the more difficult of English poets. This book is an attempt to throw some light on the most important of his poems so as to enable the student not only to understand but appreciate them because there is, indeed, much to admire and enjoy in Donne's work. The subtlety and obscurity of his poetry discourage us no doubt, but the labour we spend on him is highly rewarding.
The book has been divided into three parts-(1) John Donne, the Man and His Poetry, (2) Detailed Consideration of Selected Poems (the text of which has been provided for ready reference), (3) Important Questions with Answers.
The book is designed to meet the requirements of advanced university students for whom Donne may have been prescribed for exhaustive study. The old spelling in the text of Donne's poems has been retained, but modernized spelling has been used in quotations, etc.
Finally, I must say what I have said about each of my previous books: "No originality is claimed for this work. It is not a research paper. The object was to select and co-ordinate critical material and to present it, with suitable illustrations from the next, in an easy, intelligible and assimilable form."
