Based on original writings, the book explains in lucid language the principal ideas and concepts of different thinkers, a brief life-sketch of each has been given with a view to explaining the basic influences and sources in each case. The central argument of all major political writings has been indicated. Attempt has been made to relate the genesis, growth and development of political ideas, concepts and doctrines of succeeding epochs to their felt social urges and economic necessities. This volume covers the work from early times to Grotius. Volume II is from Hobbes to Laski. The book will meet the needs of University students at the under- graduate and post-graduate levels. Dr. M.G. Gupta was a member of the faculty of Political Science at Allahabad University for twenty years where he taught and guided research with distinction. His study of International Relations Since 1919 was a pioneering work. He is also the author of several other treatises on international relations. Dr. M.G. Gupta was awarded D.Litt. by Allahabad University on ‘Indo-Ceylonese Relations’ which the then Sri Lankan High Commissioner in India hailed as a work of ‘vital importance’.
