ADULT EDUCATION Homer Kempfer This book has been written primarily as a practical guide for directors of adult education in a broad range of agencies and community organizations. It draws upon research findings and pulls together experience from practitioners in a variety of situations. It suggests solutions to many recurring problems of program administrators. In addition, this book emphasizes the changing nature of adult education. The cental focus of adult education is no longer on narrow remedial functions, even though millions of adults in this country are illiterate and tens of millions more are below the educational levels desirable in a democracy. Likewise, the acquisition of salable skills no longer provides the exciting growing edge of the adult-education movement. Instead, the greatest growth in recent years has been in public affairs, in human relations, and in liberal studies. The impact of an accelerating science and technology on patterns of living is so great that old means of adjusting to change no longer suffice. Millions of adults are finding in the concept of lifelong learning a strategy both for adjusting to changes and for creating new patterns of living. At the adult level, education is becoming less a way of passing on the cultural heritage and more a method for solving the problems of the present and future. In addition, both voluntary groups and governmental units are recognizing that changes are integrated most easily through educational process. Moreover, there are signs of added strength as new cooperative relationships evolve to reduce confusion, duplication, and lack of coordination and to increase the effectiveness of methods and approaches. While the ultimate shapes of these new patterns are not clear and are not blue printed in detail, this book discusses principles and practices which should help administrators better relate their programs to the total community pattern of need for adult education.
