Theories of Learning
Ernest R. Hilgard
The Aim of this edition, as of the first edition, is to provide understanding of each of the major learning theories in relation to the experiments to which that theory gives rise. The years since the first edition have seen an enormous expansion of psychological research in learning and no dearth of theoretical contributions. The task of providing an introductory exposition that is at once clear and critical becomes increasingly difficult.
The author has chosen to deal with the major positions that flourished in the first half of the twentieth century in much the way they were dealt with in the first edition, building the exposition around the psychologists who gave currency to the several theories. Thus the chapters on Thorndike, Guthrie, Hull, Skinner, Tolman, Classical gestalt, Lewin, and functionalism are repeated, though each has been throughly rewritten. New chapters include one on the learning significance of Freud’s psychodynamics one on mathematical models, and two on other current developments. Despite the orientation toward historical antecedents of current theory, nearly half the literature cited is new to this edition.
It is hoped that this book may assist the student of the psychology of learning and his teachers to find their way into the current experimental and theoretical literature of learning.
