Karukku, which describes the life of Bama, can be compared to Charles Dicken’s Oliver Twist and Mulk Raj Anand’s Coolie for the use of the bildungsroman technique, a technique which become a powerful tool in the hands of Bama to depict the physical, mental and spiritual growth of the protagonist, from her childhood to womanhood. As the champion of Dalit Christian women in Tamil Nadu, Bama openly expresses her fury as well as her resolve to work for them in Karukku. She assesses the strengths and weaknesses of her community in an impartial manner and thereby makes the world understand the feelings of the dormant Dalit community in India. Shakti Batra has been Vice-principal, Dyal Singh College (University of Delhi), has also taught at the Kabul University and the University of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek.
