Like his dramatic works, Shakespeare’s Sonnets have stood the best of time ever since they were published by Thomas Thorpe in 1609. Most of them have been called dramatic lyrics because they are passionate, intense and emotionally vivid, even though they are a complete break from the established form and conventions of the genre. The Bard has explored in his sequence of 154 poems three major themes- the nature of love, the vicissitudes of time, and the permanence poetry- with unparalleled success.
