F. Scott Fitzgerald : The Great Gatsby American novelist, short story writer and scenarist, F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) explored the disintegration of the American dream in This side of Paradise, The Beautiful and the Damned, The Great Gatsby and his last unfinished novel, The Last Tycoon, The Great Gatsby was published in 1925 to mixed reviews and Fitzgerald died believing himself to be a failure. However, the Fitzgerald revival in the late 1950’s put The Great Gatsby in the tradition of the Great American Novel. The present critical study places The Great Gatsby in the Jazz Age of the 1920’s, and examines and assesses the novel from various critical and textual angle’s. In addition to the definitive text, this study deals with and discusses significant details of Fitzgerald’s multi-layered magnum opus.
