The foremost of twentieth-centrury dramatists, George Bernard Shaw was a proponent of the drama of ideas. He espoused his philosophy in all his plays. In Saint Joan he has presented his concept of God and religion, and depicted how mankind treats its saints and geniuses in all ages and climes. The tragedy of Joan is thus a continuing tragedy in that it is a clash between individual judgement and established authority.
The present critical study seeks to assess Shaw’s contribution to Modern Drama with an analysis of his Preface to Saint Joan, the play itself and the Epilogue. Select critical problems have been answered for the benefit of students at graduate and post-graduate levels in our universities.
