Tom Jones, apart from being Fielding’s masterpiece, is one of the greatest English novels of the eighteenth century. The most striking features of this novel are its organic unity despite the multiplicity of episodes and events, its vivid and convincing portrayal of characters of whom we get here an amazing variety, its realistic and graphic pictures of social and domestic life of the period it deals with, and its wholesome philosophy of life (charges of immorality and obscenity against it not with standing). This book, designed to meet the examination needs of advanced Indian students, deals at length with all these aspects of Tom Jones, besides containing a brief summary of this rather long novel. Important questions with complete answers have also been included, further to enhance the utility of the book. Prof. Ramji Lall has been Formerly Principal of Dyal Singh College (University of Delhi). He authored quite a large number of critical studies on English literature which have been well received all over. He is also associated with large number of examining bodies.
