George Orwell intended to criticise the communist regime he saw sweeping through Russia and gradually spreading to Europe. Though he agreed with the Marxist principles, Orwell was unable to accept the communist interpretation of Socialism because he saw many similarities between the communist governments and the previous Czarist regimes in Russia, Communism, he thought, was inherently hypocritical. This hypocrisy, lust for power and totalitarian tendency he depicted in what he called “a fairy story”– Animal Farm. The present critical study seeks to examine and analyse the text of Animal Farm in the light of its various interpretations as well as the underlying satire from the point of view of students in our universities.
