David Copperfield may safely be regarded as Dicken’s greatest novel. It combines the interest of plot with the interest of character-portrayal, and both these with the interest of a personal and autobiographical record of events. Among the characters, Mr. Micawber alone would be enough to lend distinction to any novel; but there are other memorable figures here as well. Pathos and humour, in both of which Dickens excels most other novelists, are to be found here in great abundance. Indeed, here Dickens makes us laugh heartily, and makes us cry in an ample measure. This critical study of Dicken’s masterpiece is designed to meet the examination needs of university students in India and abroad. A large number of questions with complete answers to them are a special feature of this book which will be found by students to be immensely useful. Prof. Ramji Lall has been Formerly Principal of Dyal Singh College (University of Delhi).
