IN MODERN TIMESHistory of China provides an interesting study of rise and fall of a nation. In the early days of human history, culture and civilisation of this nation drew the attention of all civilised nations of the then known world. China then suffered from superiority complex and did not like to maintain contacts with European nations. It followed policy of stride relation. It was gradually and slowly that European nations, particularly the Britishers, started piercing seclusion walls of China; first important event being the first opium war (1838-40). As the war ended, few ports were thrown open by China for trade with England. The war however, gave a rude shock to Manchu dynasty, which was then firmly saddled in position in the country. People's resentment found expression in T'ai P'ing Rebellion. These were other rebellions of great magnitude in the country too. All these events weakened the nation and demands for reforms came from all sections of society. There was international scramble for concessions in China by European powers in years that followed. But equally strong resentment against foreign encroachment in the country, was too visible and came out in the shape of Boxer Movement and Rebellion. The situation went out of control of the ruling dynasty, when ultimately Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, came to power after Chinese Revolution of 1911. He commanded respect of the nation for about 3 decades but ultimately was bowed out of power when communists under MaoTse Tung and Chao En-lai came to power in the country. To day China is one of the world's big powers and an important member of world's big powers and an important member of world body, playing a significant role in Asian politics. The present volume provides a very interesting study of seclusion, penetration, resistance and changes which China as a nation has seen from its early days to the present. Every effort has been made to ensure that events recorded are authentic. Sub-headings have added value to the otherwise lucid narrated events. Language of the book has been knowingly and purposely kept simple so that there is no difficulty in understanding the events and happenings. The present handy volume, has been brought out with a view to meeting the demands and needs of those who are interested in the study of History of China.
