Japan, the 'land of Rising sun' has an interesting past history. Till the middle of the 19th century one was a feudal State both in nature and character. Japan entered into political life with the emergence of the tokugawa family which assumed the title Shogunate and was in position from 1603-1867. Under them military men popularly known as Samurai wielded real power. But the country was primarily agricultural. It was during this period that attempts were made by European powers to come near Japan, when Perry reached Japanese coast in 1853. In 1867 Shogunate rule ended in Japan and Emperor Mutsubits came to power. His Meiji dynasty continued upto 1912. During this period in 1871 feudalism was abolished in Japan several educational reforms were introduced and economy was set right. But most important events were Sino-Japanese war, Anglo-Japanese Aliance and Russo-Japanese war. It was the last mentioned war in which Japan defeated Russia and their prestige went up. Japan continued to have international glory and prestige till they were defeated during the second world war. American armed forces continued to stay in Japan for few more years, after the war was over. After withdrawal of foreign forces Japan again began to reconstruction her economy and political life.
