BEN JONSON THE ALCHEMIST Ben Jonson’s comedy, The Alchemist was first acted in 1610 and printed in 1612. Considered one of his greatest plays ridicules the people’s belief in the philosophers’ stone and how subtle, the Alchemist and Dol Common use Love-wit’s house in London for deluding and cheating people by holding out to them promises of the elusive stone. They play on the greed of Sir Epicure Mammon, Tribulation wholesome and An ani as, Dapper and Drugger, and Kastril, the quarrelsome lad who wants a good match for his sister, Dame Pliant, who is married to Love-wit at the end of the play.
