Dr. HANS RAJ Ph.D. Former Director and Senior Fellow INDIAN COUNCIL OF SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH Indian Government and Politics is a vast subject of study and to comprehensively deal that in a limited available space is not an easy affair. The whole study spreads over a period of about 400 eventful years. For the sake of convenience the volume has been divided in three parts. Part I deals with the period when Britishers were masters of India and the country was under bureaucratic regime. It is in this part that nationalist movement in India has been covered. Part II is exclusively devoted to Indian constitution whereas Part III deals with problems which are putting Indian polity under heavy strains. The author has tried his best to incorporate maximum material in each chapter, so that all topics are comprehensively covered. Each chapter has been updated to the extent possible. Authorities on the subject, where necessary, have been quoted and sincere efforts have been made to present the ideas in an understandable language and lengthy quotations which detract the attention of the readers from the main idea have deliberately avoided.
