About half the people in the world live in Asia, and of that half, about half are Chinese. Hardly any of the other people in Asia rule themselves. The Chinese do rule themselves. For this reason alone, what the Chinese do and what happens to them are important to everybody. If things go well with China, they will go well with Asia. At the end of a world war it will matter a great deal whether things go well or badly with half the people in the world. We have written this book because we are Americans who have lived a great part of our lives in China. We have tried to make the book simple and straightforward. If you are not simple and straightforward you are bound to get lost in the description, history, and politics of a country as big as the United States and many, many times older. We have tried equally hard not to be superficial. You cannot understand a country just by description, unless the description gives you material for thought. We have tried to give the facts in this book in such a way that readers can do their own thinking about the facts.
