Social Anthropology Paul Bohannan Anthropology has subdivisions, but except historically, it has no beginning. In writing an introductory book or teaching a beginning course in the subject, everything must come first. Since that is impossible it seems appropriate to explain, whatever compromise an author has found necessary. The major task in teaching or in learning anthropology is to get the texture of our own culture and our own lives into conscious perspective so that we are not misled by them when we look at other cultures and other lives; so that, in short, we can see other cultures without warping them and without losing our commitment to our own. To enable him to work with the facts and interpretation of social, cultural, and psychic life made by all peoples, including his own, the anthropologist must be aware of scientific theories and categories. Like all books which purport to “introduce” a subject, this one exposes the creed of its author : anthropology is among the best devices yet discovered for turning human animals into self-aware animals
