The earlier edition of this book, written by the late Professor Raymond Garfield Gettell, was so well received, no attempt has been made in this revision to alter its general character. Many of the chapters remain much as they were. Where changes do occur they will be found primarily in the chapters dealing with Greek political philosophy and in the concluding chapters on liberalism, fascism, and communism. To give emphasis to these latter subjects, I have reorganized the book into parts, eliminating in the process a number of chapters on nineteenth century thought which now seem expendable. New Chapter-end bibliographies have also been provide which contain recent, more available material. __ Lawrence C. Wanlass
