This book is designed to serve as a professional guide to the principles and practices of modern journalism. In writing it, the author has drawn upon the experiences of a quarter-century as a working newspaperman (or journalist if you prefer) in the United States and abroad, plus ten years of teaching journalism. The emphasis, therefore, is on the practice of journalism rather than theory on social criticism.
The approach is as realistic as the author has been able to make it through illustrations and examples. The student and the young professional will become acquainted here with the basic substance of journalism, presented in the form of a set of commonly accepted procedures and standards. The more practiced journalist and teacher will find in addition a detailed exposition of the body of knowledge, experience, and ethics that makes journalism a profession rather than a trade, craft, business, or art.
In the organization of this text, every effort has been made to reflect the most modern methods of training journalists. The first section, which is centered entirely on basic practice, presents a broad view of newspaper and wire service operations and their principal tools– language, methods, laws, and fundamental procedures. In the second section, entitled “The Writer as Journalist,” these tools are put to a wide variety of uses. The third section deals with the work of the reporter on beat and general assignment, his responsibilities, practices, and principles. In the final section, which is devoted to the newest aspects of journalism, the emphasis is on interpretive writing, reporting in depth at the local, national, and international levels, specialization, and the increasingly important role of the journalist in public service.
