As a result of many years of teaching and research in petrology, we perceived the increasing need for a book that would serve the basic requirement of a beginning student in geology and, at the same, time would lend itself conveniently for use by those engaged in technical and applied aspects of geology, in all of which some knowledge of rocks in general is fundamental.
This book was developed from a course of lectures originally given at the University of Oklahoma and later at Hardin- Simmons University and Baylor University. The lectures were directed not only to geology students, but also to students in other sciences, especially petroleum engineering. The presentation followed in this book was adopted fairly closely from a one - semester course on the subject. The book is intended as a text for the systematic study and understanding of rocks at the beginning and intermediate levels. It presupposes that the student has taken physical geology and elementary mineralogy in a university. The task of summarizing modern petrology from the viewpoint of petrogenesis has been attempted. The scale of the work is small as compared with the tremendous magnitude of its subject, but it is nevertheless believed that the field has been sufficiently covered.
This text was planned to provide in a small volume a review of the rock-forming minerals encountered in the more common rocks, along with determinative tables to assist in the identification of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, and descriptions of the common rock types.
