This book concerns the scientific foundations of education. It has been developed with the hope that those who study it seriously will be in a better position to understand their own motivations in education, and the motivations of others who are involved with the school and its activities.
The title and table of contents of this book indicate a somewhat different approach to the exploration of education than is usual. Experience has tended to show that many students “know” (from a brief glance at the table of contents) what a book is about, and form a hard and fast judgment about it before any actual study of the book is undertaken. Often such prior judgments impede real enlightenment later. It is recommended that each student assume from the beginning that he does not “know” what THIS book is about. It is further suggested that judgment be deferred, concerning its educational value, until midway through the book. It is highly recommended that the reader approach this work with expectation as well as skepticism and that he read carefully and analytically, considering the content with as much open- mindedness as he can achieve.
This text is intended to help those inclined to seek advice from others who know no more, in an empirical sense, than the person seeking the advice. It is intended to help each reader recognize that the power to better solve his own problems resides to a large degree within himself , once he knows how to formulate legitimate questions and propose appropriate operational procedures which, properly undertaken, often provide useful answers. More specifically, it is intended to help those who expect to teach to become familiar with the deficiencies of our language, and apply corrective measures which have not been, up to this time, a typical part of professional education.
