Chinua Achebe has been called "The Father of African Writing" and his magnum opus, Things Fall Apart is the most widely read book in African Literature, No Longer At Ease his second novel, forms parts of the Triology that culminates in Arrow of God. It tells the tragic tale of Obi Okonkwo, an Ibo from Eastern Nigeria, a promising representative of his generation, the bright boy of his village Umuofia who returns from his studies in England to try and live up to the expectations of his family and his Tribe. As a Civil Servant Obi holds a respected job; as the fiance of Clara, the girl he met on the boat, he has much to book forward to; yet nevertheless Obi falls victim to the corruption of the capital. No Longer At Ease tells the story of an African tragically under pressure from a changing world, a story as old as African and as new as today's headlines. The present critical study explores Obi's predicament in the light of his Ibo background, his idealism and his subsequent downfall. The text has been thoroughly analysed and examined with the Critical problems arising therefrom the meet the requirements of university students in India and abroad.
