William Hazlitt was a literary critic and essayist of note. Scholarly yet lucid, his style is marked by allusions, reminiscences and anecdotes but he suffers in comparison with his more celebrated contemporary and friend, Charles lamb. However, Hazlitt’s contribution to the English essay is undeniable. The present study takes into consideration 21 of Hazlitt’s essays. It provides the text with explanatory notes and critical appreciation of each essay. The critical problems arising therefrom have been dealt with in great detail for the benefit of students in Indian universities. Shakti Batra, Formerly Vice-Principal of Dyal Singh College (University of Delhi), has also taught at the Kabul University and the University of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek.
