John Webster The While Devil : Shakti Batra The White Devil, along with the Duchess of Malfi, is John Webster’s best work. In the Senecan revenge tradition, it is episodic in structure, allowing the author to arrest the dramatic movement while he exploits with brilliant poetic effect the terror or grandeur or pathos of the moment. The ambitions and lusts of Webster’s characters are beyond ordinary human compass; there is something Fraustian about them; they kill and betray and contrive for self-interest. And surrounding all this is the corruption of court life, which helps to breed these ambitions and poisons the virtue in everybody The present critical study analyses and examines the text (with paraphrase, glossary and notes), and tackles select textual problems with answers for the benefit of our university students. Shakti Batra has been Vice-Principal, Dyal Singh College (University of Delhi). He has also taught at the Kabul University and the International university of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek as well as students from the Tibetan Public Service Commission, Dharamsala, and Kiyushu University, Japan.
