Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) was one of the foremost European dramatists of the twentieth century. His theory of drama led to the evolution of epic theatre, which is in evidence in Mother Courage and Her Children. The play, set against the background of the Thirty years war (1618-48) in Germany, was published and staged in 1939, a few months before the Second World War broke out. Depicting the futility of war, the play vividly depicted the destruction and devastation caused by war. Yet the warning was not heeded. In this sense, Mother Courage and Her Children, which gives a “wom's eveview” of the war, proved prophetic. The present critical study assesses and examines the multi-layered play from various angles in order to make it more accessible to students in universities in India and abroad.
