This Edition of Dryden’s All for Love has been prepared in the hope that it may prove useful to all types of readers, both those who are reading it without any purpose except to understand and enjoy it and especially to compare it with Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra, and those who are required to make a more detailed study of the play. The Introduction has been kept as short as possible and consists of generalisations; particular instances will be found in the notes to relevant passages as they occur in the text, and can thus be studied in relation to their context. The editor hopes in this way to prevent any danger of the play being considered as a series of isolated “points.” Beside providing explanations of all difficulties, the notes are intended to form a kind of running commentary on the play, one object of which is to show how character and motive can be revealed in a verse drama just as they can in prose. The editor has added a prose paraphrase or précis of many passages which some readers may find unnecessary; but his object has been to help less experienced readers of verse to a ready understanding of the train of thought and argument which the verse form often tends to obscure.
